RU OK? Day activities held to spark mental health conversation

R U OK? Day is the national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone to ask their colleagues, family and friends: “Are you OK?” and to remember to support people who may be struggling with life’s ups and downs every day of the year.

In recognition of R U OK? Day this year, we hosted a range of events at our MRL sites, to help spark the conversation about mental health and encourage our staff to “trust the signs” that someone they know may be going through a difficult time.

Trusting the signs is about noticing any changes in the behaviour of the people you interact with on a daily basis, and then asking the question, “Are you ok?”

An ice-cream van paid a visit to our Mt Marion, Windarling and Koolyanobbing sites to serve up ice creams for those hard at work. In addition, a troupe of comedians will be providing some laughs onsite at Iron Valley this evening and Wodgina on Saturday.

Meanwhile, employees at MRL’s Applecross office, and the Kwinana and CarbonArt workshops, received a much-needed morning boost, with the arrival of the Boost juice van whipping up a range of fresh juices and smoothies.

Other MRL sites throughout the state hosted a barbecue or morning tea.

“The aim of providing these events for staff on R U OK? Day was to let them know they are valued, and to encourage conversations between colleagues about mental health and wellbeing while they were waiting for their treats,” said Health and Wellbeing Coordinator Sean Duffy.

“It is important that we provide opportunities for staff to chat about how to have healthy conversations about mental wellbeing.”
